Web Design 101
A well-designed website is crucial to online businesses and services. The appearance of your site greatly affects the traffic and amount of users that become leads or customers.
If a website feels cluttered or doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense, then potential customers will immediately leave the page. In this article, we include some easy elements of web design that you can implement on your own websites to make them look and work better.
What is Web Design?
Web design is the process of gathering together all your ideas and arranging them in an aesthetically pleasing, user-friendly way.
However, you can’t just focus on making a page look good. There are many different elements that when combined correctly, increase traffic and make a website great.
Below are just a few examples of important elements of web design to consider implementing on your website.
A well-designed menu or navigation bar will help guide users through the pages of your website. Pages on a website can tell the story of your business and show the visitors of your website the value you can add to their lives, whether it be through products, services, or information.
Navigation bars or menus should be descriptive of where the tabs will take you. Visitors to your site want to be able to find what they are looking for easily and too many dropdowns or undescriptive tabs will make it hard for them to find what they need.
More than 50% of the searches done globally now come from mobile devices. This means that more than half of the traffic that comes to your website is most likely coming from cell phones.
When a website is not formatted to be mobile friendly, issues can occur. Images won’t resize, text can be stretched or left to the side, and most of the page just won’t show up on the screen.
If a site is not mobile friendly, you risk losing half of the visitors to your page!
The content written on your pages can make or break the success of your site. When writing content and information for your web pages, it is important to know when there isn’t enough written and when there is too much written.
There is no line drawn in the dirt on how much is too much and how much is too little. It is important not to draw out your information to the point of it becoming useless or annoying to the reader.
Many readers skim the information written on your page to find what they need. It is important to cut out the “fluff” in many instances so that your readers are accessing the information they want instead of having to dig through what they don’t need.
- Don’t be afraid to keep it short if there isn’t much that needs saying
- There isn’t a defined minimum, although typically try to have at least 300 words
- Make sure that what you write is written well (grammar and spelling matter!)
- Keep your audience interested. Make what’s written worth their time.
Positioning and Alignment
Positioning and alignment make up a big part of creating a page that is pleasing to the eye. If everything is simply aligned to the left and photos are aligned to the right, visitors to your site will be visually bored and leave it. Not only that, but it simply won’t look good!
Balancing images, text, and other multimedia objects across a page make up a large part of web design.
“White space” doesn’t actually mean a web page needs white colored space present on a page. It is simply empty space on the page that helps your eyes focus on the important content being displayed.
When websites are cluttered with information or graphics over an entire page, you lose the chance to attract the visitor to what you really want them to read.
White space allows you to add focus to different elements of your page by creating a contrast. The empty space (or white space) also allows a page to look more professional and pleasing to the eye.
Trying to change a lot of things about your website can be challenging and time-consuming. It is best to sometimes just redesign the look of your website altogether instead of changing things here and there.
